Controversy Over MBA For Governor's Daughter

Submitted by lucas20 on Thu, 12/27/2007 - 18:10.

Did the daughter of West Virginia governor Joe Manchin receive a MBA degree from West Virginia University that she did not deserve?  A report published by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette alludes to a possible controversy where Heather Bresch actually completed each of the credits needed to earn the degree.  The paper reports that she may have finished only have of the credits necessary to graduate.  The school has stated that the error, which caused them to award the degree 10 years later, was one of record keeping.  Nevertheless, the board of governors for the university will meet to discuss the issue.

Manchin and Bresch are no strangers to controversy.  In 2006 a report released online entitled "State Deals for Manchin Family Tip of the Iceberg," Gary Abernathy discusses a slew of accusations against Manchin and Bresch (formerly Heather Manchin Kirby), mostly surrounding nepotistic-awards for no-bid contracts through the WV Secretary of State's office.  In October, Mylan Inc. (NYSE: MYL) appointed Bresch Chief Operating Officer.
